I don't know where to start! We have packed so much into the last few weeks!
We worked hard on our entries for The Cumberland Show. The theme this year was 'How green is your garden?' and we were delighted to receive third prize for our scrapbook and fourth prize for our show display. Much of the credit for our brilliant garden must go to Mrs Coupe who is, sadly, retiring at the end of term. We will miss her and wish her every happiness in her new pursuits.
The children have attended lots of local events - Small School Cricket at Lanercost Cricket Club, The Life Bus, Lanercost picnic plus sports. They also performed at the choric poetry event at Brampton Methodist church. They wore black and white clothes and sparkling cats ears and performed 'Jellicle Cats' by T.S.Eliot brilliantly! As a finale all the schools came together to perform 'Old Macdonald had a farm' with lots of animal impressions which was good fun.
Our year six children hosted a get together with children from Bewcastle, Shankhill and Lanercost schools with Rachel from NISCU at Lees Hill. The year six children have also attended the leavers' service at Carlisle Cathedral, transition days and activities at William Howard School and Rock UK sessions. All our children enjoyed Godly Play sessions with Rev. Rachel and also enjoy regular visits from Rev. Angela.
We were lucky to have good weather when we held our sports day so we were outside on the school field then finished off with the traditional water race on the yard. The parents' water race was hotly contended and everyone got wet much to the children's amusement!
We were also lucky to have good weather when we went to Forest Schools. We had a fantastic time - many thanks to Mrs. Armstrong. We are planning more visits to Forest School later in the year.
The PTA held a party for children and parents at Walton. It was lovely to get together for lunch, chat and play. The PTA also organised an afternoon tea in a marquee on Walton Village Green. The tickets sold out quickly. It was a fantastic afternoon. The children played on the bouncy castle, played football, took part in a colouring-in competition while the adults enjoyed a delicious tea. Well done to all the PTA and Alice and Lee (ex-Lees Hill pupils) who worked incredibly hard and raised over £1000 for school. We also raised £89 from our recent 'Bags to School' collection.
We received our SATs results and are delighted - well done everyone!
Our topic this summer has been Peter Rabbit and so our summer trip was to The Beatrix Potter Experience, Windermere. We thoroughly enjoyed the 'Where is Peter Rabbit?' puppet show and the exhibition.
A librarian from Carlisle Library came into school to explain to the children about the summer reading challenge which is to read at least 6 books during the holiday. She has inspired us all to read more during the holidays - including all staff who have been assigned the challenge too!
We held our leavers service in Walton Church on Thursday morning. It was very emotional as we wish so many people well as they go on to pastures new. we are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Dalgleish but she leaves us in the very capable hands of Mrs Stobbart. We also wished Mrs Coupe, Mrs Collison and Miss Aitchinson well as they move on to new challenges. Most of the children played musical instruments for the service. All the children presented their artwork, sang and read out prayers for the year six children that they had written themselves. There was hardly a dry eye in the church as they sang 'You'll never walk alone'. After the service we walked over to Walton Village Hall for an afternoon of activities. The children planned, budgeted and made their own fundraising stalls. There was all sorts - lucky squares, mocktails, lego tower building, plants and much more. the children love FUNds afternoon and raised nearly £500!
Plans for next year are in full swing. From September the school name will officially be Walton and Lees Hill Church of England Primary School and we are starting a breakfast club. We welcome Mr Chris Howard into school as our new KS1 and EYFS teacher. The Toddler Group will continue on Tuesday mornings and Community Lunches on the first Wednesday of each month. Our topic in September will be 'Out and About' and we have lots of exciting trips and experiences planned. School will be open on Monday 2nd of September from 1-2pm and Tuesday 3rd September 12-1pm for parents and friends to pop in for a look around the classrooms, coffee and a chat.
We hope you all have a peaceful, happy holiday from everyone at Walton and Lees Hill C of E Primary School.
